Fat Lambs Production EXHIBITION AT SMITHFIELD

' LONDON, Dec. 7. A campaign to combat the supremacy of New Zealand lamb on the British market. has been inaugurated with the Australian Meat Board 's first Austra-lia-wide export lamb competition in con.iunction with the Council of the Australian Society of Breeders ot British sheep. Judging will extend for six: months for the all-Australian grand ehampion and other competitions, The progress judging places Queensland first, Western Australia second, and Victoria and New South Wales,
equal, third. Tasmania has not yet en* tered. An exhibition at Smithfield of 185 carcases of lamb was visited by the Australian High Commissioner. Mr. S. M. Bruce, and representatives of the Argentine, Canada, the United States, and New Zealand. Mr. J. I. Hamilton, the judge said that the competition was an incentive to producers to export lamb which would be suitable for the home market, and which would fill the gap after the New Zealand season. The carcases entexed were all neat and compact, and were a revelation of what Australia was capable of producing. Mr. H. H. Heywood, the Australian Meat Board 's executive officer, said that Victoria had previously led in the production of Southdowns, but he was gratified to find that all States were now marketing lamb comparable witb the world 's best. The Agent-General for South Austra- • lia. Mr. McCann, said that the board was determined to keep pace with New Zealand 's publieity. After the exhibition, a bpyer offered 8id a lb. for the entire entry, which is about one penny a lb. above the ruling market value. The offer was refused because the exhibition is being transferred to Selfridge's shop.
