CHINESE CHARGED
Charged with a serious offenee against a Maori girl who was not yet sixteen years of age, a young Chinese, William Barry Wong, appeared before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., in the Magistrate 's Court at Napier yesterday. DetectiveSergeant H. Nuttall prosecuted and Mr. S. H. Morrison appeared for accusea. The girl concerned gave evidence that she was fifteen years of age. She had been working at the garden at Whakatu where the accused lived. After some time, they had gone to her father to ask him if they coald get married. It was after that that she told the accused her age. They had lived together as man and wif e for about f our months, right up to the time she had left the garden on December 10. The girl's father stated that he had told Wong he might marry the girl, and he would still be agreeable to that. He had not told Wong the girl's age. A story similar in all its details was told concerning Stanley Wong Shing's relationship with the other Maori girl, also aged 15, who worked at the garden. In this case also accused had the eonsent of the girl's parent (her mother) to marry her. Both accused, who pleaded not. guilty, were committed to the Sujreme Court for tri&l,
