Serious Charges Admitted By Two Waipukurau Men

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. The brealcing of a number of motor regulations and the affixing of wrong number plates to a truck resulted in the appearance in the Waipukurau Magistrate's Court today of John Hugh Thomson and George Hunter, Waipukurau. The offences were discovered through the breaking down of the tru°ic on the way to Dannevirke. Traffic Inspector W. E. Yates found it unlighted on the roadside ana set on foot inquiries which led to a whole series of charges being bfought by the police. Thomson was charged with: (1) Being the owner of a motor vehicle he caused a number plate removed from another car to be affixed to it-, (2) knowingly permitting George Hunter to use the vehicie while it was unlicensed, (3) operating an unlighted motor vehicle, and (4) operating a motorvehicle without a lieavy-traffic lice'nce. Hunter, who was formerly a : taxidriver, was charged with: (1) Affixing a wrong number plate to the vehicle, (2) using an unregistered motor vehicle, and (3) -ailing to carry a warrant of fitness for a vehicle he. was driA'ing. The plates had been remoAred, the police stated, from a truck belonging to a finn empioying Thomson. His offence had since. caused his dismissal. Thomson had instructed Hunter to alter the plates, say ing he (Thomson) would accept the blame. Thomson for using an unlieenced vehicle Avas fined £2, for using wrong number plates £3, for having no lights on the vehicle 10/-, and for having no heavy traffic lieence £1 10/-. Court costs Avere 10/-, 10/- 12/-, and 12/- reBpectively. Hunter was fined £1 with costs 12/for affixing the Avrong number plates and on the other tAVO charges lio was conA'icted and discharged.
