(By Telegrapli-
WELLINGTON, Last Night. "It is true that some of fhe sleepers sent here from Australia are not up to staudard and that some of them are infested with grub," said Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, when asked to comment on a Press Association report from Blenheim that speeies of weevil had been discovered in a number of hardwood sleepers imported. for the South Island Main Trunk Railway. Mr. Semple said that immediately the position was discovered steps had been taken to stop anv further supply of thr sleepers from Australia and a cablegfam was sent to Australia asking for the principal official concerned to come to New Zealand at once. A reply has now been received that Mr. Cook, Chief Timber Inspector, would arrive he^e on D'ecember 21st. Investigations were proceeding to ascertain the number of sleepers affected. The grub found in the sleepers was an Australian grub and quite apart from that some of the sleepers were not up to standard. Everything possible has been done to liave matters adjusted as soon as possible.
