NAPIERS SOUTH AFRICAN WAR MEMORIAL
During the 1931 earthquake the soldier on top of the South African War Memorial was shaken off his perch. Porgetting his military training and the dignity of his nniform, he lost his head. What became of it no-one, with the possible exception of some enthus-' iastic and seeretive souvenix-hunter, can say. It has been suggested that a new head might be produced, and on Thursday the Napier Borough Council considered a proposal to demolish the existing memorial and rebnild it on a new site. The matter cime np in the report of the engineer, Mr W. D. Corbett, who submitted a monumental mason's quote for the whole removal job, including cleaning and repairing the marble figure of the soldier and proeuring and fitting a new head. The council is going into the question of a suitable new site for the monument, and a deeision will be arrived at at the next meetirg.
