TIMAEU, This D a(y„ At the first wool sale in Timaru for the current season, 14,634 bales were catalogued, as compared with 17,S81 hales at the corresponding sale last year. The original allocation for tne sale was 20,000 bales but was not filled as numbers of growers withheld their clips in anticipation of better pnees at later saies. The opinion of buyers was that the sale was the best field up to the present. Compared witfi Christchurch, values showed a full halfpenny advance for halfbreds and a halfpenny to thre? farthings for crossbreds. There were few withdrawals, and passings were normal. The wool is In much heavier condition than last year, containing a fair percentage of dttst; but on the whole it ie sound but not quite as well grown as in previous seasons. As at previous saies, the Continental seetion dominated the market, but Bradford pieked up a fair quantity of suitable lots. Japan and America were out of the market. There was t» small selection of merino, the better lots of which were purchased by Dominion mills, which were also active for the best halfbreds. Bellies and pieces were keenly competed for by Continental buyers and on a clean-scouroa basie were relatively dearer than fleese wool. Prices were:— Merino 13$d to 17Jd. Halfbred 12id to l8Jd. Three-quarterbred lOd to lfiid. Corriedale 13id. to 16id. Corssbred 9d. to 13id. Halfbred pieces — to 16d. Merino pieces — to 25d. Three-quarterbred — to 14£d. Crossbred pieces — to 12d. Halfbred necks — to 154d. Merino necks — to 15|d.
