PROGRESS OF SEWERAGE SCHEME
Reference to the delay in the coiu ction of the sewer outfall scheme oceasioned by the contractor encountering an unsatisfactory foundation in the vicinity of the old Ngarururo River, was made by Mr C. E. Evans, borough engineer, in his monthly Teport to the Hastings Borough Couneil last night. "The principal work carried out during the month has been the construction of the reinforeed concrete culvert at the beach," said Mr Evans, when commenting upon the progress made with the scheme. " A start was made with pipe laying for the nine chains on the north side of the old bed of the^ JNgaruroro river, but after laying three chains on spall foundations, very bad ground was met with, requiring pile foundation. "It is not possible to estimat3 the distance that pile foundations will .je required, until the ground is opened up, but sufficient piles and beams are being made to cover a distance of 70 feet. Although indications tend to show improved conditions it will not be. possible to decide whether pile or spall foundations will be required until the trenc'i is opened up." . Cr. T. Falconer: When is it expected that this work will be completed? Mr Evans said that it was difficult to estimate when the work would be completed, owing to the nature of the difficulties encountered. "I am hopeful that it will be done before the winter; well before then, I think," he said.
