Workers Under Factories Act INTERPRETATION SOUGHT

- AUUEl/Aira, Last "Nlghtr 1 Members of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association and also of th© Auckland Employers' Association ara being advised by their xespective organisations to withhold until the position has been more clearly determined tha payment of the extra wages for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year 's Day which the Court of ATbitration has decided must be paid to workers subject to the Factories Act. Thi» Court, in making its judgment, said it was based on the strict working of the clause in the Act the effect of which had apparently net been realised by thei legislature when puttihg through the legislation. At a meeting of the general eommit* tee of the. Auckland Manufacturers' Association, a letter was received from the Wellington Association that apart from any action the Government might take to remedy the position which was never intended to arise it was hoped to have the opportunity of obtaining an interpretation of the law in the Supreme Court. Bending a fina) decision on the question it had recommended its members' to withhold payment for Boxing Day 1936, Christmas Day and Boxing Day 1937, and New Year's Day 1938, provided _ of _ course there was no speeific provision in the award governing the industry concerned, which affeeted the position. _ The general committee decided to refer the suggestion for the favourable considerable of members. v
