WHARVES BUSY

Press Association.)

Record Tonnage Handled at Auckland Yesterday

(By Telegraph—

AUCKLAND, Last Night. Only a few hitches were met with on the Auckland waterfront to-day, when the port handled the heaviest gross merchant shipping tonnage in its history. Every berth was available and two coastal vessels used the seaward ends of the two wharves. Three overseas steamers, the Cumberland, Harbledown and Gera, anchored in the stream and the Cumberland and' Harbledown will not be able to berth before to-morrow. The Gera vacated her berth at King's wharf for a day to aliow the liner Monterey to come alongside. The Monterey was the only deep-sea ship to sail to-day and the arrival in the morning ^ froni Java of the Dalmore will maintain the numbcr of overse'as vessels in port at 15. There will be no spare wharf accommodation again to-morrow, but a number of departures will ease the congestion and the activity will begin to return to normal on Wednesday.
