Switzerland to Reopen N.Z. Consulate

(By Telegraph-

AUCKLAND, Last Night. To open a Swiss Consulate at Wellington, Dr. Walter Schmid, of Berne, arrived at Auckland by the Niagara from "V ancouver. The office will replace that which was abandoned at Auckland several years ago, and the purpose of its establishment is the fostering of mutual trade between New Zealand and Switzerland. Dr. Schmid was born at Berne and is a graduate in law of Berne University. For the lasfc 10 years he has been occupying posts in the Swiss consular service at Cincimiati and New Orleans. Ho proposes to open the new consular office early next year as soon as he has been properly accredited by the New Zealand Government. He said he hoped to be able to promote more extensive trade between the two countries than at present existed. Already Switzerland was taking a proportion of New Zealand wool, and although it was a competitor of the Dominion in dairy products, he had no doubt that there would be otlier arlicles of trado which could be exchanged with profit to each country. Switzerland was producing textiles, watches and machinery whieh should provide a basis for New Zealand imporlations from his country, *' ■
