Tke metalling of Lookout aud Hinerua Hill roads was authorised some time ago, but, due to pressure of other work, there does not appear to be rny immediate prospect of arranging for this work to be carrie/, out by the council's own lorries. I suggest that it be let to an outside contractor. Clinton. Riding: Graders worked on riding road for 86 hours during the month, and 125 lorry and 263 labour hours were spent in general maintenance and patching, during which a total of 274 cubic yards were used. The pipe extension was put in at the threatened washout near the retailing wall on Mill road. Narrow portions of the Sherwood-Clinton road were widened to 16 feet as authorised. The narrow portion of Wilson's cutting road was inspected. It would be much improved by widening two or three feet for about 100 feet. The expense would not be great. The horse grader worked in this riding for 40 hours and completed .the South Makaretu road, after which it rnoved out of the riding. Takapau Riding: The grader worked on riding roads for 79 hours during the' month, and 141 lorry and 128 labour hours were spent in general maintenanee and patching, during which 329 cubic yards of metal was spread, of which 288 cubic yards were used for completely re-metalling Speedy-Jackson road from the Fairfield dump. Patching has also been carried out on the Fairfield-Taltapau and Ashcott-Waipu-kurau roads. Work has been commenced on the improrement of the bad cornor on. the Aorangi road. The horse grader moved in to the riding during the month and 128 hours were spent in grading the Rangitoto road, part of Paulsen's road, and parts of the Otawhao Block roads. Main Bridges: Mill road (Clinton) retaining wall: The filling at the :etaining wall and the cutting of the bluff was completed, a total of 87 cubic yards being moved. The road requires some metalling to finish. A system of numbering of all bridges in the county has been imaugurated. Every bridge has been given a number, and these are now being fixed on the bridges concerned. A card has been opened for each bridge giving all details available of its design, etc., and also all repairs and renewals carried out from time to time.
