Waipukurau Girl's Success

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. An honour in musical circles whieh rarely comes to New Zealand has this year been gained by a Waipukurau girl, Miss Nola Mathieson,- daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Mathieson, Tutanekai road, Miss Mathieson 's success was referred to by her teacher, Mrs. L. Swain, R.M.T., during a recital in St. Mary's Hall. Miss Mathieson had been awarded a certificate for distinction in Grade VI (pianoforte), said Mrs. Swain. In the last 14 yearsj she added, an average of 3.5 a year of these certificates had come to New Zealand. In that period three Hastings pupils had been awarded the distinction, but the present occasion was the first; time such an award had come to Waipukurau. Had Miss Mathieson gained five moremarks she would have been eligible for a seholarship. She was under 14 years old when she .\at for the examination. Mrs. Swain also announced that Miss Doreen Williams had gained honourable mention two years running and had this year gained distinction in Grades I, II and III. She is to be awarded a eup for her efforts.
