GRANT TO ST. JOHN AMBULANCE
The 'confusion that arose as the result of the public announcement of the Minister of Internal AfEairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, that £100 had been made available to the "Hawke's Bay St. John Ambulance," out of the annual distribution of the surplus from art unions was clarified this morning by the Mayor of Hastings, Mr. G. A. Maddison, who explained that this grant was to the Hastings branch. During a recent visit to Wellington, Mr. Maddison, in his capacity of president of tlie Hastings branch of the St. Johu Ambulance, approached the Government for a grant of £100 from the national art union surplus fund to assist the Hastings brigade, which, he pointed out, had been liandicapped greatly through lack of equipment. Mr. Maddison also stressed that the brigade was in need of uniforms and that there were no less than 20 fully certifieated members ofi the brigade. They were in urgent ueed of uniforms so that they could attend various functious iu fitting mahner. The brigade had obtained a new room in the old Heretaunga Club buildings and this required to be furnished, and necessary equipment for classes and members was also required. "Tlie grant of £100 saves the association from liaving to mahe a call upon the public," .said Mr. Maddison, wben commenting upon the success of his appeal to the department. "I deeply appreciate the aetion of the Government in granting this sum and I am sure that it will stimulate the brigade, which is quite enthusiastic in its work and which now is becoming increasingly stronger in numerical strength.
