PARENTS' DAY AT CENTRAL SCHOOL

1 1 ■' " ✓ Ref erence to the rebuilding of the school, which is to commence shortly, was made by the chairman of the Hastings Central School Committee, Mr W. H. Bennett, in his addTess at Parents' Day at the school yesterday. Mr Bennett told the large attendance of parents at the ceremony that work on the construction of the infants' department, which would be in use at the beginning of next year, would commence this week4 and that tenders for the other portion of the school would be called after Christmas. The visitors to the school were entertained by a drill exhibition by individual classes, and an opportunity was also given to inspect the school building and the work of the pupils. The headmaster, Mr Parker-Smith, then welcomed the visitors, and introduced Mr Bennett. Pleasure at the evidence of interest in the school given by the large attendance of parents, was expressed by Mr Bennett. He read an apology for absence from the chairman of the Hawke's Bay Education Board, Mr G. A. Maddison, who was away in Wellington, in which the school was congratulated on its progress during a broken year, and informed that at least portion of the new school would bo ready for oecupation a't the beginning of the first term in 1938. It was also announced that two gold medals, presented by Mr H. Suckling^ to the boy and girl pupil who made most progress during the year, would be presented at the school in connection with the pres.entation of the dux prize On Thursday. Mr Bennett extended his congratulations to the headmaster and his staff on the work of ihe school during the year, ancl rdierred to the work of his committee and of past committee members in building up the school. He wished the pupils the best of luek. Following . the ceremony, parents witnessed a dissplay of folk dancing by the pupfls, and were also invited to patronise various stalls arranged on the grounds, proceeds from which were to be devoted to the children 's eports funds.
