OBITUARY
hon. d. buddo Tho death oceurred yesterday of the Hon, D. Buddo, aged 81, states a Press Association message from Christchurch. Mr Buddo was Minister of Internal Affairs and Acting-Minister of Lands from 1908 to 1912. He collapsed in hi? city office and died in the ainbulance on the way to hospital. The Hon D. Buddo was born in Edinburgh in 1852, his father being a surgeon in the Indian Ariny. He was i*i his twenty-first year when he arrived in New Zealand and the country wa? experieneing one of . its early land booms. After two years in Canterbury as an engineer he took up land in th'o Ellesmere district, living there till about 1890. He then bought a farm at Fernside, where' he lived for many years. Mr Buddo began his public life on loeal bodies. He entered Parliament in 1893, defeating the Hon. E. Moore for the Kaiapoi seat by 85 votes. He was twice defeated fbr the seat, once li> 1896 *and again in 1919, but on each oceasion he re-entered Parliament at, the next eleetion. He was a membar of the Ward Ministry from 1906 to 1912, his pOTtfolios including Internal Affairs, Health, and Industries and Commerce. He was a strong supporter of the Liberal Party and his loyalty never wavered. Mr Buddo retired from active politics in 1928, but was appointed to the Legislative Council in 193C.
