(Eeceived 8, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 7. The Daily Telegraph 's Tokio correspondent says that newspapens give prominence io the situation in Shantung, where new defence lines are being created. The opinion is oxpresged that this will &QQtt be the scene pf major oper.ations, Japan hitherto has been anxions to avoid iighting here beeause slie has millions invested in the Tsingtao cotton mills and other industries which a conliict may degtroy. The Times Tokio correspondent says that Cabinet discussed the situatlgn contingent on the fall of Nanking. It is hoped that the new Chinese Government will be sufficiently imposing to justify recognition and be disposed towards peace. It may replace Marshal Chiang Kai-shek's administration. The Daily Telegraph 's Tokio repre,sentative says: "The impending fall of Nanking occupies every mind ana ail nowspapers. Plans are eompleted for a flag parade by day and a torch parade by night, involving a million students and other youtbs marching to shrines of Shinto gods and Japan 's warrior dead. The stock market has further improved. Papers, how&ver. point out that tha fall of Nanking "Will not end the flghting; guerilla warfare will foljow. ? ? Japan, owing to expanding South Sea trade, has appointp.d consulates at Menado and Sandakan.
