CHRISTMAS MAILS
Record Number of Letter* Sent By Air HASTINGS STAFF BUSY "We had a record air rnail for England this yeax-," said an official of the Hastings Post Office this morning when cominenting upon the Christmas rugh 011 mails ovcrseas and locally. He said that the air mail this year was easily four times greater thaxx the average, and was a partieularly heavy one. The last of the outward English xnails for Christmas was despatelxed early this i ^.ek, axxd was almost exclusively lettex's, there beixxg very few cards, This was not surprising, as it was only natural that people would , want to obtain as much as they cou'd for the extra postage costs ixfvolved in air mails. . There remain but two mails for Australia that are s::re to be delivered belivered before Christmas — if there is no waterfront disturbaxxce — while between now and the festive oecasion the Awatea will make two trips from New Zealand across the Tasman, the second voyage being scheduled to end on Onristraas' Eve. It is a matter of conjecture xvhether mails on this trip will be delivered before the holiday period. In aixticipatioxx of the nsual Christmas rush on mails and telegrams the Hastings postal staff will be increased by some 15 or more. These assistants will aid the postmen in the deliveries of greetings and expressions of goodwill to tlie people of Hastings, and a number will help also ixx the delivery of telegrams. Aix eveix greater rush than usual is anticipated by the staff, in view of .the increased. Qvergeag mailff,-
