A WELCOME RAIN
Farms & Gardens Bjnefit HARVESTING AFFECTED . Welcome rain fell overnight in Hawke's Bay, and gave reason for geiw eral satisfaction. The rather long dry spell experienced of late was having its effect on the food supply for stocbf more, especially the pastures, but #fter the present warm rains it is confidently anticipated that considerable benefit will be derived. "It's just wonderful rain, mogt rn( freshing and will do a world of good." summari'ses the general eomment of thf country .people as well as the towss* people. Probably the only seetion ot the rural community that did not partieularly welcome the rain at the monxeni were those engaged in harvesting, 1 but the majority had ample warning and rushed harvesting operations to tb® oxtent of gathering np the already-cut hay. Activitieg will have to .be renewed after the weather clears. Indicatione are that the season, generally, has been a favourable one for hay and other, crops, rcfreshing rains, such as now being experienced, having fallen at opportune times and averted possihi® parchxng. In Hastings 98 pointa of rain wer® recorded in 12 hours overnight, ther® being a steady, though light, and ai times nxisty rain, falling. Anxieties felt by the Hastings Borough Works JCepartment regarding exoessxve consumption of water will be relieved for thi time being, for supplies will be replenished, and for a week or so at any rate there will be no longer call for th® continued use of the hose in the vegetable and flower gardens.
