t f.T' | in ir r -r-« Hastings Party's Outing at Week-end A party of 11 mernbers of the Heretaunga Tramping Olub, led by Mr A. Toop, spent the week«end in the ranges at the north end of the Ruahines. The outing commenced at 2 o'elock on Saurday afternoon and, Starting from Big Hill Station, they made for Ruahine hut, Thick fog and misty rain vras OUCOUntered sliOi'tly after starting out, and this made pfogress slower than usual, so that it Was not until after Seven o'elock that the hut was reached. Here they were met by Mr Jack Taylor, of Puketitiri, who assisted - with the pteparations for the meal and eatei'tained the party with an accordeon. The fog lifted ovemight and the folloWing morning broke fine. The pavty made a reasonably early start and prOeeeded in a northerly direetion along the range to the Ngaruroro river, Ea route the party split into two groups, four mernbers exploring some limestone eaves and bathing in a mountain stream, while the remainder went on down to the river via the Te Koau stream. it was their intention to wade down to the Omahaki stream, but the river was flewing to6 fasfc, so the programme WUs changed and a trek up the left bank of the river was made to the juuction ef the Taruarau river. The return journey was commenced uiiJ-afternoea on Sunday and it was rather strenuous going. The trip was a splendid oue, ' though rathOr long, and tho majority of the mernbers arfivcd back at ,Big Hill Station, following a brisk traoip from the hut with either «or« feOt or blistered toes.
