WOMEN'S CLUB CELEBRATES THIRTEENTH BIRTHDAY WITH JOLLY PARTY

The thirteenth birthday of the Hastings Women 's Community Club was very happily celebrated last evening, when niany members and friends were present to enjoy the excellent programme of entertainment given at the birthday party, Mrs H. W. C. Baird welcomed everyone and isaid how sorry the club president, Mrs T. H. Lowry, was that she was unable to be present through illhealth. Mrs Baird said that it was the first party in the new rooms, and she felt pleased that such wonderful work had been done since the opening night. done by the secretary, Mrs H. LovellSmith? and as an expression of appreciation from the members presented her with a beautiful bouquet in shades of red. Mrs Lovell-Smith wore a gown of black velvet with silvev trimmings. - Mrs Baird said that four club members, Mrs L. J. Harvey, Mrs Hedley Harvey, Mrs O. C. Moller and Mrs J. Wright, had spent the day making bouquets for 12 club members who would have liked very much to be present but wlio were prevented through ill-health. The bouquets were delivered during the afternoon to those in Hastings and Havelock, - and the otliers were to receive theirs later. Miss Helen Ford, who helped to deliver the flowers, told the club members what joy they had given and how very much appreciated they were, those who had so kindly made them being especially thanked. The recipients were Mesdames T. H. Lowry, F. Perrin, A. J. Foot, C. Gardner, H. Holderness, E. Y. Simpson, J. W. Bates, E. C. Clarkson, It. Nairn, Holden, C. Fitzroy, and Miss E. Pickett. * Mrs Baird elso thanked Mrs €1. M. Bishop, Mrs Dudley Newbigin and Miss Lewis, who had arranged the flowers in the lounge so artistically. The flowers were very beautiful and were greatly admired. There were huge bowls and wall baskets of pinky-manve rhododendrons, mauve stocks and irises, blue delphiniums and pink roses, while a large float bowl was filled with exquisite deep blue clematis. Mrs W. G. Stead spolce about Mrs Baird 's coming trip to England and wished her a happy holiday. She presented Mrs Baird with a lovely bouquet in pastel shadbs which toned beautifully with her gown of patterned chiffon dn shades of silvery grey, pale pink and blue. The programine was opened by Mrs H. S. Eobinson, who gave two delightful piano solos, and later in the evening played a second group. She chose "O Star of Eve" (from Tannhauser), Waltz (Brahms), Prelude (Chopin), "To the Spring" (Greig) and as an encore "Russle of Spring" (Sinding). MiSs Elgar Christie's charming voice was heard with much pleasure, and her songs, given in two groups, were "Early in the Morning" (Montague Phillips), "A Little Winding Road" (Landon Eonald), "From the Land of the Sky-Blue Water" (Cadrnan) and "A Summer Afternoon" (Erie Coates). After a very hearty encore she sang "A Sons Eemembered" (Erie Coates).

A most amusing sliort play, "They're None of Them Perfect" (Sophie Herr), was splendidly acted by members of the evening section, the following taking part: The Misses Mary Lankovsky, Hilda Pope, • Betty King, Doreen Apsey, Alison Black and Kona Hawley. A great deal of merriment was caused by those who took part in the short play, "Old Moore's Almanac," the cast being as. follows: Lady Dull-As-Dxtch-Water, Mrs George Davies; Sir John Dull-As-Ditch-Water, Mr Guy Hardenberg; Algernon, their son, Mr H. B. Poppelwell; Daisy, Miss Zeta Wright; Miss Trent, Miss Francis Nutter. At the conclusion of the play Mr Hardenberg was asked to cntertain the audience and tMs he . did most efcectively. During the evening Mrs Bair£ presented a dainty Yictorian posy to Miss Jean Stevenson, a member of the evening section, who is leaving Hastings shortly and who has been a live member of the club. When thanking the members Miss Stevenson told of the very great pleasure she had derived from the club during her stay in Hastings. A competition, guessing the names of film stars from their photographs, Tesulted in Mrs S. Averill, Mrs Thompson and Miss Elgar Christie having the full 25 names correct, the winner finally being Mrs Thompson, who received a prize. } The party was a fancy head-dress party, and much admiration was expressed at the clever and original headdresses. ;Thef liead-dresses were judged by Mrs Selwyn Chambers and Mrs Selwyn Averill, who awarded first pnze to Mrs H. M. Bishop who, as leader of the bridge circle, had a most appropriate and an exceptionally clever one with a small table complete with playing cards, seorers and pencils, cigarettes and ash-trays. The prettiest head-dress was l,hat of Mrs O. C. Moller, a dainty Dolly Varden jjosy of flowers tied under the chin with ribbons. Another very clever one was that worn I5y Mrs A. Giorgi, which was a very eolourful Christmas tree. There were also numerous othens which attracted much attention. A delicious supper was much enjoyed, and the two-tiered birthday cake, with 13 candles, was cut by Mrs W. A. Maekenzie. Among those present were: Mrs H. W. C. Baird, Mrs W. G. Stead, Mrs W. A.
