ANNUAL REPORT OF W.C.T.U. HASTINGS BRANCH
The 31st annual report -,of the Hastings branch of the Women 's Christian Temperance Union was presented at the annual meeting held last week. Extraets from. the report are as follow: — The branch opened the year with a mei..bership of 70, and at the conclusiou there were 78 members. All Red Letter days have been kept as follows: — Francis Willard Day, speaker Miss McLay; Peace Day, speaker Mr W. A. G. Penlington; White Iiibbon Day, speaker Miss Jerome Spencer, O.B.E.; Remembrance Day, speaker Sister Gladys; Franchise Day, speaker Mrs Lovell-Smith; Maori Day, speaker Mr A. l'sdale. An Easter address was given by the Rev. C. B. Boggis. Eesolutions' dealipg with the following subjects had been passed during the year: — Maori Rest Room; train aecommodation for our Maori people. In this connection a letter was ' received from the Minister of Railways, ttie Hon. D. G. Sullivan, stating that an extra carriage had been placed at the serviee of the Hastings stationmaster for use when necessary. In regard to the rest-room, Bishop Bennett has promised to meet the union and diseuss the prospect of a Maori rest-room for Hastings. Other subjects were: Drinking iu and around dance halls; League j of Nations Union and national peace; women police. To those Avho had led the larious departments worked by the' brancli shicere thanks were exitended:— Evangelistic Superintendent, Mrs R. D. Sutherland, who has so ably. led our devotions; Mrs Xurner, whose services at the organ have added to the helpfulness of the devotional part of our meetings; Miss Mitchell, wlio in the early part of the year led the "Y" branch, now in recess, but it is hoped wll be regtarted early in the New Year; Mrs McArthur and Mrs Rawiings. who have rendered very fine serviee among the L.T.L. (we recommend this branch of our work to the sympathetic co-opera-tion of all our members) ; Oradle Rcll leader, Mrs Lloyd; White Itibbou agent, M'rs Murtagh3 who has faithfully carried out her duties through auother year; Mrs Paul, who, with her usual thorbughness, devoted. herself to superintending the home meetings, bufc linding it necessary to reiiiiquish the duties, Mrs Rae was appointed in August and lias since ably carried on the work; the flower and philanthropic work of the union Mrs Paul is still willingly undertaking, and her work among the siek and aged is of a very real value; for our scientific facts, which have been read to us by Mrs Osborne an^ have been of a high order; Mrs Cameron, who, in spite of much ili-healtb, has attended to our literature department. The social part of our afternoon funetions have been well catered for by Mrs McArthur an'd Mrs Rawlings. Thelr serviee has been much appreciated by us all. The Press work has again been done by Mrs Wilson, who has given much help during the year. The pulpit notiees have Jjeen attended to by the secretary. Special reference i's made to the faithful work of the treasurer, Miss Mitchell. and the union regrets that she is unable to continue her duties. The union ' fully appreciates the fine serviee she has rendered to the union.
