Our Own Correspondent.)

(From

[W.A ..f., "WAIPAWA, Dec. 3. ] ' Yesterdav afternoon a party incudingj the Main Highways Board and officersl of the department paid a visit to Wai- j pawa in the course of an extensive | tour of the North Island. The party; eomprised Messrs. Baker (chairman), Scott, Talbot, Wynyard, Morrison, Knapp (secretary), Albertson (engineer) and Dinnie (district engineer). They were met in conference by representatives of the Waipawa County and Borough Councils, comprising Messrs. N. M. Paulsen (chairman, County Council), L. Glenny, F, Eagle (deputy-Mayor), F. Holt and .V, E, Douglas. After extending a welcome to the visitors Mr. Panlsen drew attention to the need for instructions as to the responsibility of ranging on the State highway. Mr. Baker replied that it was the re* sponsibility of the local authority. Mr. Paulsen also called attention to the dangerous position at the site of the new overhead bridge on the Wai-pawa-Waipukurau road, it being almost impossible, he stated, to see an approaching train. The board agreed to see if arrangements conld be made with the contractor to warn motorists when trains are due. In Tesponse to representations by Mr. Paulsen in regard to the suggested deviation of the main highway through Gwavas, Mr. Dinnie was instrueted to confer with Mr. Douglas and furnish a report on the proposed route, which, it was stated, would give a better road and eliminate three bridges. The board gave a sympathetic hearing to representations by Mr. Eagle that departmental officials might assist the borough in the preparation of estimates and specifications for tar-sealing. Mr. Eagle also drew attention to the very dangerous condition of the roadway from Rose street corner to the traffic bridge. Members of the board agreed that the road is sadly in need of attention and Mr. Dinnie was instrueted to furnish a report to the board. Subsequently the visitors were entertained to afternoon tea, and later continued on their journey to Hastings. ,
