Fruitworkers' Award

FRUIT W ORKER.

Sir, — All the fruitworkers are to be dragged into this union racket and are to pay out 25/.- to join up just, for the privilege of being allojved to work only 44 hou'rs per week. \ Well, I'm not going to be a mug and part with my Iiara-earned cash to provide another seeretary with a handsome salary. I suppose the balance, if any, will be contributed to the Labour eleceion fund. The fruit season is 3, short and merry one, and qveryone works well and willingly to earn all he can in about three months to square back debts and have a little in liand for extras.. Now, a union is going to try to stop this. Well, I'm not joining any union. I can get more work than I want and I have nevof known any competent . fruittvorker out of work during the season. My wages have fluctuated between 1/9 and 2/6 per liour fla-t rate, and I have worked 60 and 70 hours a week, but have not kept anyone out of work by so doins.

The award makes no provision for wages of non-experienced men. I have worked for 15 years in fruit seasons and object to working alongside an incompetent man who draws the same wage. No orchardist or firm can afford to pay overtime, so I think we would be cutting our own- throats by joining tbe union. . . I would like t.o hear another fruitworker's opinion. — Yours, etc.,

Hastings, Dec. 4, 1937. ((Other letters are held over until Monday. )
