Learn-to-Swim Week. For the nationa-1 learn-to-swim week, two afternoons are to be devoted at tlie Waipukurau District High School to instruction in swimming, Whieh will be given by Ihe teachers to ciasses above Std. 1. It is already part of the school prograimne for the pUpils to bt> takou every afternoon to the 'l'ukituLi river by two of the teachers from 2.45 till 4 o'clock and they will coutinue to do this uiitil Ihe end of the's year. Pupils of the secondary. department have a swimming penod every Wednesday afternoon. A Dryer November. Less rain fell in Waipukurau last ifionth than in November, 1936, and aitogether the year's total so far is cunsiderably less than fof the samo period last year. The rainfall for November totalled 1,3 inches. Rain fell on sevcn days, the heaviefet fall being 57 points on November 24. In November, 1936, 1.98 points of rain was registered. Tlio total fall for the last 11 months of this year is 21.31 inches, the total for thS same period last year being 82.41 inches. "Road Up." The water pipes at tli'S poiht are at present under. repair, and in consequenc© a large portion of the roadway in the centre of . this busy iiitersection has been torn up and barricaded off, making it extremely difiicult for traflie to negotiate the interseetion. Lighting of Main Highways. Yesterday the Mayor of Dannevirke, Mr E. Gibbard, and the Town Clerk, Mr G. T. O 'Hara Smith, waited upon the Main Highways Board in connection with the council's representations regarding the board contributing to the madntenance of the lighting of main highways in boroughs. The council's proposals were fully explained. The chairman of the board, Mr A. J. Baker, explained to the deputation that it was not the policy of the board to undertake the lighting of main highways in boroughs, this being a matter whieh could very well be left with municipalities concerned.
Ruataniwha Lodgc. The fortnightly meeting Of the Ruataniwha Lodge of Druids was held in Waipawa, A.D. Bro, H. E. Carter presiding over an excellent attendance. One new inember was initiated. The election of ofiicers resulte.d as followis: — A.D., Sister A. Watson; V.A., Sister C. Watson; I.PA., Bro. H. E. Carter; I.G., Bro. J. Gibson; C.G., Bro. A. Watson; A.D. Bards, Bros. Gaston and Vixley; VA. Bards, Sisters I. Pedersen and S. Burkin; M.C., Sister Griffen (reelected) ; coach, Bro. Half ord (reeleeted). NominationS for the various offices were plentiful, and exceptional keeness was shown. The installation is to take place on December 14. Supper was served, at the c.lose of the meeting. St. John Ambulance. The annual inspection of the Waipawa branches of the St. John Ambulance and Nursing Division was carried out by the superintendent of the Napier Ambulance Division, Mr H. S. Munro, who vsas accompanied by the. secretary of the association at Napier, Mr J. Malcolm. Followiag parade and inspection, the Ambulance' Division entertained the visiting officers and membcrs of the Nursing Division to supper. An informal talk on general matters pertaining to the work of the order followed an encouraging address by the inspecting officer, who urged . members to retain their enthusiasm and practical assistance for the work oi the association and brigade.
