MAIN HIGHWAYS BOARD

Discussions With H.B. Local Body Representatives MAINTENANCE OF ROADS ' Members of the Main Highways Board passed through the Napier district to-day and spent two hours with members of the Hawke's Bay County Council discussing matters of mutual iuterest. The Taradale Town Board and the Automobile Association (H.B.) were also represented. The Highways Board members were Messrs A. J. Baker (acting-chairman), G. W. Albertson (engineer). G. W. Knapp"1 (secretary), Wynyard, Talbot, Morrison, and Scott. The district engineer, Mr Dinnie, was also present. The Taradale Town Board asked for assistance in improving the main? highway and footpaths through the centre of their district. . The request was favourably received and the board was asked to submit proposals, with costs, to the district engineer. Mr J. H. Edmundson, president of the Automobile Association, asked the board to bring the highways up to a more modern standard in this district. The association also supported the Hawke's Bay County Council in its application to have the Nhpier-Taihape road declared a main highway.^ The council also asked that considerution be given to declaring Middle road, Elwood road, and tha road to the Westshore beach main highways. Mr Baker 'said that the boaTd could not hold out much hope of the representations being successful as it had been found almost impossible to declare any further highways this year. However, the matter would be kept in mind. Other matters xeferred to by the council included the control of State highways, the control of wandering stock, the eradication of noxious weeds, timber tax, traffie breaches, and the upkeep of footpaths. , The attention of the board was also .drawn , to the necessity for improving corners on the Te Aute and Waimarama roads and the board promised that these matters would be given' early consideration. At mid-day the boairi left for Taupo.
