(By Telegraph-

TIMARU, Last Night. The long dry Spell, which had become serious in South Canterbury, broke this afternoon, when light rain set iq. The wheat crops in particular have suffered considerably, and as a result of the threatened feed shortage the freezing works opened to-day, which is about a week earlier than usual. The country has been so dry that many farmers have been car'rying water for household purposes for some time and not a few have been obliged to visit friends in town to have a bath, The position in regard to the town supply also was causing concern, and to-day the council prohibited the use of hoses for garden purposes. The publieation of this notification was a good ornen, however, for a few hours after it appeared rain began to fall, aud it was still f alUng to-night. At the moment there has not been sufficient to do much good, but there is every indication that the fall will continue for some time.
