Safeguard Against Spin by Aircraft

LONDON, Nov. 5. The aeronautical correspondent of The Times writes:— The recent safety device of fitting a parachute to the end of the fuselage of a new aircraft lest it should prove difficult t'o get the machine out of a spin is now to become ' general in-all aircraft which are intended to have an aerobatic as well as normal certificate of airworthiness. The purpose of this device is that of exerting .an upward pull on the tail of a machine, and the parachute may be released at will by the pilot if, in the course of spinning tests, the new machine should get into a flat and stable spin/ as sometimes happens, and refuse either to respond to opposite rudder or to put its nose down to assist in restoring control lo the pilot. An Air Ministry notice just issued proyides that all aeroplanes submitted in future- for official flying trials.for an aerobatic certificate must be fitted with such a parachute, and that the structure of the aeroplanes must be such as to allow adequate strengtli for the pull of the parachute when released on the after part of the fuselage.
