Hon. J. G. Cobbe Challenges the Estimate £40.598 NEARER MARK?

WELLINGTON, Last Night. The estimates of the defieit ,in the Dairy Industfy Aecouiit as the result ot the flrst year's -operatidh of the guaran-teed-pfice and marketing schemes for daity ptoduce were challehged by the • Hon. J. G. Cobbe, M.P. for Oroua, an an intetview this evening. He Said that the defieit, if any, did not distantly approach any of the estimhtes given- either by ihe Minister of Marketing, the Hon. ,W. Nash, br in the an9ual report of the Primary Products Marketing Department. "There have been different estimates mad© of the supposed defieit in connection with the sale bf our daify produce in England," said Mr Cobbe. "The Minister'S first eStimate -was £650,000, Later the anmlal report of the Primary Produdts Marketing Department expected. the defieit would be reduced to £548,749. Now we have a reviSed 1 estimate by the Minister, who states that the defieit will be under £400,000. "I am a shafenolder in certain dairy faefories and am naturally ihterested in. this qUestion. I wish to say that any defieit — if there be any — does not even distantly approach any of these estimates. " Mr Cobbe said that from the department's figure of £548,749 should be subtraeted the surpluS on butter of £412,474 and the surplus on cheese of £27,677, arid the estiinate of cheese i and butter unsold £23,000, a tptal pf £508,151, leaviiig a real defieit bf £40,598.
