Change oi Wind Would Menace National Park RAPID SPREAD
(By Telegraph-
WANGANUI, Last Night. Fanned by a stiff south breeze, a fierce fire raged this afternooxx in tho bush on the left-hand side of National Park to. Tokaanu xoad about seven miles past the turnoff to The Chateau. The fire spread with great rapidity among the worked bush and event aally to the green timber in the bixsh'j being worked by the Egmont Box Co. Weir and Kenny's mili, and Carter's Mill, blazing over a five-mile front. The heat was so intense that the men working in the bush were forced to come out before two o 'clock in the afternoon, The wxnd dropped later m the day to a light southerly and the'fire was spreading in the direction cf Taumarunui, but was more subdued in to this evening. The mills themselves find mill-houses had, not beexx , touched by tho fire, and they will not be euda'ngered unless the wind changes to the north. 4 The assistant-manager p£ Tho Chateau, Mr Ewing, went out jto iuvesiigate the extent of the fire and found it had not touched the National Park area. It appears there is no Iikelihood of National Park being endangerea, unless a northerly. sprxngs up aad drives the fire across the xo.ad into the park.
