Maori Woman Expresse* Contrition period of probation

WHANGAREI, Last Night. Maraea Heke, the Maori woman who gained considerabje notoriety in the far north when she faiied to appear in the Kaitaia Court to answer a charge of pulling and destroying survey pegs, and who was sentenced to gaol for two months on a charge of pulling and burning parts of $ bridge, appUed yesterday for a rehearing of the latter charge. The application was granted by Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M., and the case was beard this morning. The accused admitted the chavgo. The Magistrate asked whether, having spent a few days in gaol, the accused felt inclined to defy the law. She replied that sho would have nothing further to do with the question and would uot cause further trouble, The Magistrate, etating that thcre appeared to be a genuine cltauge of heart, reduced the gaol sentence to probation for 12 months.
