Young Man Faces Charge brutal attack 'alleged

DANNEYIEKE, This Day, A youth of eighteeu, Maxwell Taylor, was remanded this morning* in the Magistrate's Court on a charge of having, at iMatamau yesterday, assaulted Una May Bernice Franee, causing actual bodiiy harm. Mrs Franee, the wife of a well-known settler, Mr G. Franee, went into her garden in the afternoon to show Taylor what she wanted him to do in the garden. While she was bending down, she was struck heavily on the-head with a pieee of pinus insignus, about two f eet long, and, it is alleged, was held down, being struck further heavy blows, the scalp being severely injured and two bones in the left hand alsot broken. Mrs Franee, now in hospital, was alone at the time of the attack, and frightened the youth into leaving. She then rang for a doctor, who dnformed the police, and Taj'or was arrested while cycling to town. He had only been employed on the farm for five weeks. The reason for- the attack is unknown.
