MR. & MRS. L. J. HARVEY ENTERTAIN IN THEIR BEAUTIFUL G ARDEN
Half the joy of a really beautiful garden is to be uble to share its pleatsures with others, and yet, etrangely enougli, niany of those who have lovel'y gardcns do not realise this. Two Hastings follc who have o>i many occasions entertained in their beautiful garden are Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Harvey, of Hastings, and there are many people in this distriet who can remember with much pleasure not one, but several, jolly afternoons spent there. Yesterday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Harvey entertained the members of St. Matthew's Guild of Fellowship,. and the guests viewed every part of the garden with obvious pleasure. Perhapa the greatest attraction was the wonderful fernery, with a variety of lovely ferns, and from here one could pasa through into a small conservatory. The roof of the fernery is made with thatched effect to let in a little sun-: light, with the result that the ferns have the very natural appearance of growing under the trees in the bush with the sun filtering through. Another part of the garden whicli was of great interest was the part set aside for growing cacti, and here many of these strange plants were to be seen in full bloom. Many different speciea. were in flower, and the lovely rich shados were greatly admired. The lily pond, too, was at its best, and the water lilies had many beautiful fiowers, a rich cream * one attracting much attention. Beautifully kept lawns, flower beds with perfect delphiniums, roses ana many other fiowers, and also the rock garden, were all viewed with much pleasure and interest. When the guests . arrived they were welcomed hy Mr. and Mrs. Harvey and after seeing all over the garden enjoyed a most delicious afternoon tea, the seats ' and tables having beeri arranged on the lawn. Much fun was caused by an amusing peanut competition, which looked s? easy yet proved most difficult. Tho winners were Mrs. P. Burr and Mrs. H. Nelson-Fowler, who were heartily applauded, and each received a daiilty gift. A putting competition was won by Mrs. H. de Denne, and the egg and Spoon race by Miss Lyndal Candy, both of whom received a prize. The guild president, Mrs. Barton Hobbs, spoke on behalf of the members and thanked Mr. and Mrs. Harvey most sincerely for giving the guild members such a delightful afternoon, and said how privileged they all were to be able to see the gaTden. In reply, Mr. L. J. Harvey said that he and Mts. Harvey were very pleased to be able to do so. Mrs. H. de Denne, guild secretary, reminded the members of the annual meeting next Tuesday at 3 p.m., titi* being the last jneeting for the year. The Vicar, Canon C. Mortimer-Jones, was present for part of the afternoon, and also Mrs. Mortimer Jones, DeaConess Holmes anfi many members.
