NAPIER GUILD LITERARY CIRCLE HOLD MEETING

The finnl meeting for this year of the litefary and dramatic circle of' the Napier Townswomen's Guild was presided over by the leader, Mrs. O'Halloran. A short story wi'itten. and dramatised hy the leader was read by Mesdames Barnett, Sorrell, Spackman, Bishop and O'Hallorau. Mrs. Bagley gave an interesting talk on books which she had read aud this was much appreciated. - A liumorous competitiQn was won by Mrs. Bagley, and after votes of thanks had been passed to the circle leadet and t.o the secretary, Mrs. Boyd, the ineinbers enjoyed afternoon tea. Recehtly the members of the Fernhill Women' s Institute entertainod the menfolk at the village hall. The iirst half of the entertainment took the form of a cfcmcert, the prooeedings being opened by the president, Mrs. Davies, who welcomed all present. Mrs. Davies was the recipient of a beautiful bouquet, presented by Barbara Finck. The ilrst item was a representation of "The Wedding of the Painted Doll," the aTtists being Eed Eiding Hood (Jay Williams), Buster Brown (Graham Martin), The Jumping Jack (Teddy Smith), the Folly Dollies (Bar-

bara Fiiich, Hazel Taylor and Marian Lordi), Little Mamma DoU (Elsie Smith), The Bridesmaids (Tionia Martin and Esme Williams), The Preacher Man (Philip Finch), The Charming Little Bride (Adrienne Finch) and equa'lly charming Bridegroom (Bonny "Williams)). The refrain was sung by Hiss Joyce Symottds accompanied by Mrs. Finch, who was also responsible for the production and to whom much credit is due. The little performers all took their parts well as a result of the painstaking training. Clever dances were given by Valerie Cleary (Tap), Barbara Finch (Tin Soldier), and Yerna Gledhill (skipping dance), and a dance duo by Valerie Cleary and Verna Gledhill. Each child received a iloral bouquet. Two songs by Miss Joyce Symonds. were much appreciated, as also was a recitation by Miss- Kathleen Griffiths, a . saxaphone solo hy Mr. Allen Saunders and songs and items by Donald Davies. Humorous stories were told^by Mr. Benouf, who also conducted community singing. A play, "Minuet of Foxtrot," was produced by Mrs. Finch, the players being Miss J. Taylor, Miss K» Grifiths, Mrs. A. Taylor( and Mrs. Colin Finch. A second play, "Hearts Love>,; was splendidly acted by Mrs. Campbell, Mra Osborne, Miss M. Brandon and Mrs. Griffiths. The thanks of the committce were extended to the artists who so ably helped to make the conctrt most successful.. An amusing moek court concluded the entertainment, those conducting the court being Mrs., Finch (judge), Mrs. Craven (crown prosecutor), Mrs. Griffiths (clerk of the court), Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Osborne (policemen). A dainty supper was then handed round by the members and after this an enjoyabla dance was held.
