WELLINGTON, Last Night. Nearly 600 employers wero eited by the New Zealand (except Taranaki)Canterbury, Otago and Southland) Tim- . ber Workers' 'Union in their claims presented in concilation council at Wellington to-day. Mr. M. J. Beardon was the presiding Commissioner. After some argument on the interpretation of a box factory it was agreed that it should^mean a factory operating for the purpose of manufacturing boxes or any other form of container from timber or fibre or mill-board or "foodboard," and include the boxmaking seetion or department of any bush sawmill or town timber yard. ' ' Head machinist ' ' was.defined as a man who is competent to and whose duty is, if necessary, to set up «nd maintain different parts of wood-working machinery, and in case of moulding and planing machines to grind into shape such moulding-irons or other cutters as may be required, and generally supervise and direct the working of machines under his control. Where a head machinist is cmployed only one man is to bo classified as such in each establishment. "Machinist" means a man who is competent to and. whose duty it is to set a maehine, to sharpen knives and cutters, to fced a maehine, to throw in and out of gear the driving belts and to keep the maehine in good running order. The day was spent on the interpreta;;ion oi' clauses and the parties will meet again to-morrow and Thursday.
