Christchurch Statistics HIGHEST SINCE 'FLU EPIDEMIC

"7 8HBISTC&OT£aff, lAst Night. st year's heavy death roll in Christchurch, the highest since 1918, the year of the influenza epidemic, will be exceeded this year by considerably more than 100. Statistics supplied by the Christchurch registrar of births, deaths and marriage3 t^-day showed that with another month 's figures yet to be included the deaths registered at the Christchurch office in 1937 had reached a total of 1491, compared with 1423 for the whole of 1930. Deaths in 1918 num- . bered 1657. Births for the year will show some Lmprovement on the figures of recent jrears without, however, approaching i the level maintained before the marked decline from 1931 onward. Marriages are likely to exceed in number the record total of last year. For the 11 months of 1937 and the corresponding period of 1936 the comparative figures are: Births (1937) 2107 (1936) 1196; deaths, 1491 and 1314; marriages, 1297 and 1187.
