WELLINGTON, Last Night. V The decision by the Government to lontribute £1000 to the Far East Kelief Fund was announced by Hon. P. Fraser. In the course of an appeal for assistance Mr. Fraser said the amount raised in New Zealand alrcady for this purpose was nearly £3000 and the Government's donation would bring the total to £4000 which was £6000 short of the amount aimed at. "This is not an occasion to discus3 Ihe merits of the dispute between China and Japan," he said. "The Government of New Zealand is acting in close co-operation with the British Government in regard to all these matters. The Far East fund which is being raised at the request of the International Red Cross headquarters at Geneva has received the moral and financial support of the British Government." Mr. Fraser recalled the prompt assistance rendered by New Zealand to the Japanese victims of the earthquake that wrecked Tokio and Yokohama. In the same way, he said, New Zealand - should lead in extending help to the victims of the present calamlty in China. When it became evident some time ago that an attack upon China appeared inevitable New Zea- ( landefs were shocked and protests of various kinds which might have involved serious reactions were threaten- . • ed, but the Far East Relief Fund presented a unique opportunity of »how ing aympathy and goodwill.
