ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING OF NATIONAL PARTY MEMBERS
Oue of the most representative gatherings of women ever held in the Pahiatua eleetorate took place in Dannevirke on Saturday when, despite shearing operationSj counter attractions and stormy weather, visitors from about 20 different districts gathered at a social function arranged. in Loader's hall for the purpose of making contact with distant members and to hear the report and address given by Mrs. J. Livingston, president of the Southern Hawke's Bay branch and the Pahiatua delegate to the Wellington Divisional Uonterence held recently. Mrs. Livingston, who is a most convincing speaker, gave a most interesting address, and stressed the importance of each indivjdual doing her fair share of the organisation for the party. She suggested that the most practical way . was for each district to convene a meeting when arrangements would be made to form a district branch. It was only by organisation along these lines that a calculation of the voting strength could be obtained. Why this course was necessary was explained in detail and each person was thoroughly impressed with the necessity of such an mvestigation. The subject of the address was most enlightening and it is a foregone conclusion that it will have a most stimu- ! lating effect for the future of the eleetorate organisation. The tentative arrangements which have been made for the formation of a local National Youth Movement were explained and each person present was asked to further this phase of pohtical work in their own environments. In conclusion Mrs. Livingston said she regretted that rumours were circulating to the eifect that Mr. Livingston was allowing himself to be nominated as a candidate for the Pahiatua seat-. "We want to emphatically deny this," said the speaker, "as we feel that anyone having th'e interest of the party at heart would not for a moment think of causing any emburassment over the seIection of candidates. At the conclusion of the business afternoon tea was dispensed and during this interlude musical items were rendered by Mrs. Peebles, Woodville, pianoforte solo Miss Bailey, also of Woodville a vocal solo, and Miss Carlspn, of Dannevirke, a vocal number, the accompanists being Mrs. E. Johnson and Miss M. Watson. Among the many visitors were thp following officials : Lady Ransom, Mesdames Purdie and Walker (president and secretary of the Pahiatua branch), J. S. Bolton and R. H. llhodes (president and secretary of the Woodville branch), and Mrs. R. St. J. Pedler (secretary of the Southern Hawke's Bay branch). As the gathering was a pronounced success it was decided to hold the sanie type of function in different parts of the eleetorate. The next one probably being held at Pahiatua.
