Japanese Seizures SHANGHAI SERVICES Customs, Post Office and Wireless CENSORS INSTALLED

It is emphasised that the three Powers — England, Franee and America — have protested to Japan against the seizure of the Ghinese Customs at Shanghai and Tientsin. The British Government is also insisting that Japan ghall not challenge the validity of the *|«Tii^ regulations on which the authority •f Shanghai Municipal Cpuneil rests. It ii learned from Shanghai that the Japanese have not only taken over the Chinese Post Office and wireless broadeasting services, but have installed eensors, while the Customs organisation has been virtnally placed under Japanese control. " The Chinese Customs normally yields about £21,000,000. The Japanese are now insisting that ihe Customs revenue should be paid into .the Japanese Bank, which wili mahe the necessary deductions for the aervice of f oreign -loans. A Shangnai message reports that British women visited their homes in the British defence area for the first ti ma for more than. a month with the permission of the Japanese. They were given half au hour to remove small effects.
