Man Who Served Sentence and Was Then Compensated

DUNEDIN, Last Night. The death occurred at Dunedin yes- - terday of John James Meikle, aged 93. Mr Meikle's name had been frequently before the New Zealand public during the past 40 years. ; He was con'victed at Invercargill in 1887 on a -charge of sheep-stealing and sentenced to seven years' hard labour. '■ On his discharge lie proceeded on a charge of perjury against a witness who testified aganist him at the trial. The prosecution succeeded, and the witness was sentenced to four years', imprison-. ment. Mr Meikle then petitioned Parliament for compensation, and in 1897 ■was granted £500 in full settlement of his claiin. . Sinee then Mr Meikle, at intervals, unsuceessfully petitioned succeeding Goveriiments for further compensation, and when the present Government came into office he again, by petition, urged his claim.
