AUCKLAND, Last Night. The wholesale and retail prices of petrol were increased by one penny a gallon to-day. . Ordinary motor spirit is Jiow* costing 2i /- and. super 2/1. Tho Increase took effect as from midnight on Thursday and although there had be.en rumours of a rise in price for some time past, quite a number of resellers were taken by surprise. Although there was no puhlic announcement of the new rates, motorists generally took the increase fairly well.

Inquiries made in Hastings this morning revealed that while a slight rise, possibly of a half-penny, is ,antieipated by re-sellers, the- general rise reported to have taken place in Auckland and northern East Cast districts dqes not apply to this area, where fixed prices are in force. "Before the prices can go up here it is necessary to have an Orderin-Council," said an inforwant "The rise that has taken place now is in areas where there is no price fixation." ' A report from Gisborne states that the third rise of one penny in the price of petrol in Gisborne in less than 12 months took effect yesterday, making the prices 2/6 and 2/o a gallon. Objection to the increase iii price has been expressed by the motorists of Gisborne through the Gisborne advisory commit-' tee of the Automobile Association, Auckland,, and the following teiegram. has been dispatched to the head office of tho association: "Petrol prices in- , creesed by penny. Understand no increase in main centres- Members up in- arms. Desire you to take action in matter."
