Mo.torist Fined £3 for Speeding

WAIPUKURAU, Last Nigbt. Remarking tbat the offence waa a serious one, Messrs A. C. Holms and D J. Turner, J.P.'s, in tbe Waipukurau Magistrate's Court to-day, fined MeKenzie Gordon Tansley, of Netherby, Hatuma, £3 witb costs 12/- fior driving on the Hatuma road at a speed excecd* ing 30 njiles an hour, and 10/- witb 12/* costs for baving no warrant of fitness. Mr B. W. Jobanson, for defendant, pleaded gnilty to both .cbarges. Tbe regulations concerning tbe carrying of n warrant of fitness, counsel submitted. were Tather barsh, and steps were being taken to make tbe owner and not the driver responsible. Mr J. H. R. S'emple, Main Highway^ Board inspector, said that le cbecked defendant 's speed for balf a mile at 50 miles an bour. It was not a question of danger to tbe publie but ratber a matter of road preservation. Tbe speed of vehicles was limited to prevent undue wear pn tbe noads, and it was! witb tbis in view tbat tbe proseeution was brougbt. Athol Nieol Kirk, of Linburn, Waipawa, was fined £2 10/- witb 12/- costs for leaving a car parked on tbe maui highway between Waipukurau and Waipawa witbout parking ligbts. Defendant, wbo did not appear, pleaded guilty by letter.
