Snow at Waipukurau. Snow on the Ruahine ranges made tbe weather chilly at Waipukurau yesterday, altbough the day jvas otberwise quite fine and brigbt. Tbe Tanges bore qutte a tbiek coating of snow yesterday morning. Scbool Social Evening, i Tbe ilnal for tbe year of a sories of social evenings at tbe Waipukurau District Higb Sebool was beld las't eve'ning. Tbese evenings were startcl at tbe scbool last June witb tbe idea of bringing teachers and pupils into closer contact. Tbey bave been beld regularly ever since, and at latet nigbt 's meeting parents as well were invited. Inter-bouse competitions are beld at tbese gatherings and also musical and vocal items. Waipukurau Scbool Exams. At tbe Waipukurau District Hign Scbool tbe tradning college entrance examinations were completed yesterday and tbe matriculation examinations will begin on December 6. Tbere is one candidate for a degree at tbe school tbis year. Scbool Holds Mock Cour.t An interesting mock-courfc trial was beld at tbe Waipukurau District Higb Scbool on Thursday. Tbe scbool is making it its policy to develop public speaking and debating among the pupils, and frequent debates betweeu members of tbe two bouses, Pukeora and Tulcituki, are beld. Waipukurau Debt Oases. In tbe following two undefended civil eases in the Waipukurau Magistrate's Court yesterday judgment for plaintiffs by default of defendants was given's T. G. Given v. J. Doria £1 10/5, costs 3/-; Mason and Paton v. G. Karton £4 1/1, costs £4 16/7. Absence of ^Tagistrate. v Mr J. Miller, S.M., was prevented througb unforseen circumstances from being present at tbe monthly sitting of tbe Waipukurau Magistrate's Court yesterday. In bis absence tbe Court was presided over by Messrs A. C. Holmes! and E. J. Turner, J.P.'s.

Motbers' Union Meets. A combined social afternoon was beld by members of St. Andrew's Presbyter,ian Ladies' Guild- and tbe Motbers' Union 'at Waipukurau on Thursday, tbe gatbering being tbe last for tbe year, Mrs W. R. Hutcbison presided. Competitions were beld and songs wer& contributed by Mesdames H. Lunn, W. Hopkinson and Misses Mary Fleming and J. Edgar. Mrs Hutcbison gavo a brief report on tbe discussion on mission work at tbe xecent , assembly in Auckland. \ • Waipawa Tennis Teams. Tbe following players will represent tbe Waipawa Tennis Club iu the match to be played against Otane over tbe week-end. — Ladies: Mesdames Knobloch, Gamby, Woods; Misses Britten, d'Emden, Limbrick, R. Limbrick, Corskie. Men: Watts, J. Knoblocb,, R. Knobloch, Weedon, Norris, , Mackie, McPberson. Play will commence at. 10 o'clock sharp. Licensing Conunittee. Tbe quarterly meeting of tbe Waipawa Licensing Committee will be beld at the Courthouse, Waipawa, at noon on Friday next. Fund for Scbool Radio. Following the donation recently by tbe Radio Listeners' League of tbe sum of £6 16/9 towards tbe fund being raised to provide for tbe installation of a modern radio system in tbe new scbool now in course of erection iax. Waipawa furtber contributiops > bave now been received. Tbe scbool committee bas in view several schemes of a iponey-raising nature, but all con-tribu-ions from tbe general publie will g o to make their task lighter in securing the amount required. Tbe sum of £15 16/9 bas been donated to date. Waipukurau Lodge Meets. Tbe election of officers took place at tbe quarterly meeting of tbe Loyal Tavistock Lodge, M.U.I.O.O.F., N-Z., at Waipukurau, over wbicb Bro. B. Robertsonj N.G. presided. A resolution of condolence witb relatives of tbe late Bro W. G. Martin, P.D.G.M., of Napier was passed. One candidate was initiated. Tbe election of officers resulted: N.G.,' Bro. 8. Bryce; Y.G. Bro. B. Hames; E.S., Sister P. Faithful. Arrangements were made for tbe installation of officers at tbe next meeting and for tbe Christmas-tree function of tbe juvenile lodge. ? ' Labour Paxty Dance. On Wednesday nigbt members of tbe Otane branch ci tbe Labour Party held a most, successful flannel dance in tbe Town. Hall. Tbere was a- good attendance, tbe Waipukurau, Waipawa and Norsewood branehes being well representcd. Mrs Cbristie was tbe guest oi tho evening, and was received by Mrs Baucke wbo extended a welcome to ber and expressed tbe pleasure tbey all felt ar baving ber witb tbem tbat evening. Miss Jessie Baikie presented Mrs Cbristie witb a beautiful bouquet of cboiea liowers. Excellent music for tbe dances was played by Te Tau's orcbestra, and Mr M. Higgs was M.C. Supper wau served by members of tbe ladies' committee under tbe supervision of Mrs Baikie. First-Aid Classes. For some montbs past Mrs J. M. Hislop bas been conducting classes for tho Wairoa brancb of tbe Red Cross Society in iirst aid. Mrs W. P. Bryant examined tbe pupils, numbering 10, on Wednesday nigbt, witb tbe following results — Passed witb honours, Miss Mary Kelly, 85 per cent. cent. and Miss Cyntbia Eose, 81. Misses Ve Callahan 63, F. Doyle 75, E. Ilannam 73, F. Corbett 71, D. MeDonald 70, P. Curtis 62 and M. Deacon 64.
