NAPIER AERODROMES

Borough Council and Harbour Board BOTH SITES WANTED Desirous of retaining both the Beacons and Westshore aerodromes, the Napier Borough Council has communicated with the Napier Harbour Board to that e(Cect, outlinging the terms under- which the Small Farms' Board is prepared to make available an area of roughly 520 acres at the Beacons for aviation purposes. The council 's letter reads: — "Your letter asking for full and detailed information regarding the purposes for which the embanfcuient site is required has been considered by the council. "In accordance with the recommendation of Wing-Commander Cochrane, the coupneil desires to secure. both sites for aviation purposes, but as it is not anticipated that the embankment site will be used to any great extent, at least for so-me years to come, the council has in mind the use of this area for recreational purposes, the nature of which, howevei*, has not been decided upon. "The council is now in a position to give your board full information regarding the terms on which the Small Fanns Board will release the area of approximately 520 acres at the Beacons for an aerodrome. The board requires: ' ' (a) A capital contribution of £6485 0/11, being the estimated proportion of the total of the capital cost which should be carried on by this area. " (b)The payment of an annual maintenance cost of £258 10/- for roading and drainage. "(c) No restrictions on the erection of telephones or power lines on the internal roads nnless the Airport Board or council agrees to bear the additional cost of putting such service underground. "The Controller of Civil Aviation has forwarded a plan reserved for aerodrome purposes, this plan showing the suggested lay-out of buildings and runways. He also forwards a plan of the areas which will be required to be covered by proclamation restricting the height of obstructions to flying. "There sliould be now sufficient information available to enable the holding of an early meeting with your committee to explore the position.'. '
