It is believed that at least 162 are dead and missing. Many were blown to pieces, and others were so mutilated as to be unrecognisable. Armies of cooli.es are digging in the ruins to recover further bodies. The Japanese advaneing on Nanking claim the capture of Wushing. Eorty persons, including five children, were killed in an air-raid on Nanking. Eight machines bombed the heart of the city. The fronts of shops and bouses were ripped off. Japanese bombs at Nanking damaged the National Art Gallery. The Japanese have warned the lnhabitants of Canton to evacuate the city, as it will henceforth be subject to iudiscriminate bombixxg. Eood riots have hroken out in the Erench Concession at Shanghai. Thousands of ragged refugees besieged rice shops, the police dispersing the mohs by baton charges. All food shops are now guarded. With the arrival of fresh troops, the Chinese are making a determined bid to stop the Japanese advstoce on the Wusih front. It is claimed that Japan has been forced to yield ground, while the Chinese are heroically resisting in tbe streets of Wushing. The Japanese army spokesman said that a halt had been called on the whole front for the purpose of reforming the lines.
