B.M.S. SINGING GROUP HOLD FINAL MEETING
Many members of the singing group of the Hastings branch of the B.M.S. attended the final meeting for the year held at the home of Mrs W. A. Greer, Nelson street, Hastings, on Monday evening, when thq subject for consideration was twentieth eentury composers with special refereilce to New Zealand composers. Artieles on the ,influenees which brougt about the changee to the modern forms of composition as introduced by fiebussy and coutinued by such composers as Ravel, Seriabiu, Moussorgsky and Stravinsky through t6 the present day, were read by Miss Williams, and notes on modern composers and their style were given by Mrs Corrigan, while a xeport of a meeting of the N.Z. Composers' group in Wellington was also read. The following gave illustrations of vocal compositions : — New Zealand composers: Miss Joyce Symonds, "Impressions," by John Corbett (born in Ashburton now resident in Hastings) ; Miss Delcie Williams, (a) "A Portrait," (b) 1 ' Dreams, ' ' both by Roy T. C. Williams (born in Waipawa, resident Gisborne); Mrs Corrigan, " Aehal by ihe Sea," by Rosflda Lawrance; Mrs Greer, "Waiata Poi," by Alfred Iiill (born in Wellington, resident of Sydney). Other modern composers: Tvro-part songs^ (a) "Twilight Shadowis" (Aisatian melody arr. Alfred Mofliatt), (b) "A Sunny Holiday" (Freneh Ronde arr. Alfred Moffatt)> Misee* Crawford,
McLeod and Mrs Crawfordj Miss Cald- ' well, "The Primrosy Gown" (Michael Head); Miss Joyce Symonds, "Mussette" (Norman O'Neil) ; Mrs Corrigan, "Slumbor Song of the Madonna" (Michael Head); Miss Olsen, (a) "To a Chelsea China Lady" (Beryl Hadley), (b) "The Shepherd's Song" (Elgar). Two little piano compositions by Goossens, "The Old Musieal Box" and "The Hurdy-Gurdy Man" were also played by Miss Williams.
