Eesolutions combating the criticisnt of the Governor-General, Lord Galway/ by the Nofth Canterbury Methodist Synod because of his attendance on a Sunday at a golf tournament held in Christchurch recently, were passed at a meeting of the Christchurch executive of the EetUrned Soldiers' Association to-night. Most of the discussion on the resoln-1 tions was taken in committee. The discussion arose when Mr a. h. Cainpbell said he desifed to ask the opinion of members about the criticism against his ExcellCney, Mr d. w. KusSell; i don't think we ought to raise any question regarding religious bodies. Mr Gampbell: i am not going to make any colnparison between them. "We wero tesponsible Ior the Governor-General 's attendance," ne said. "We invited him and we must accept a certain measure of responsibility. As the King's representative, he cannot defend himself. He is robbed of the right of reply. He has a responsibility not to any conference or to us, but to the King." Mr Campbell then moved: "That this executive deprecates the action of the North Canterbury Synod in critieising unjustly the action of his Excelloncy the Governor-General in attending the reeent golf tournament held under the auspices of the Eeturnea Soldiers ' Asso ciation. ' ' Mr Russell immediately moved that discussion on the motion bo taken in committee> any decisions arrived at to be communicated to tho Press. Mr Russell -'b motion was earried. On resuming in open meeting, tho vieo-president, Mr a, e. Haynes, who presided, reported that mr Campbell 's motion had been earried, together with another resolution which read as i'ollows: — "That this executive expresses to his Excellency the Governor-General its appreciation of his graciousness in attending the annual golf tournament under the auspices of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers ' Association, an action keenly appreeiated by all the exServicemen who took part. It further trusts that he will favour the association with his presence at any further gatherings of this nature," .
