Taxi-drivers Defy State Regulations CARRIAGE OF TOURISTS

AUCKLAND, Last Night. Working under contraet for the International Tourist Bureau, 10 taxi-dri-vers decided to defy tho Government Tegulation that, without, a temporary tourist car licence, they may not carry passengers beyond a distanee of 75 miles from the city, and on Friday and Saturday took passengers from tno cruise-ship Strathmore on trips to Rotorua. These taxi-drivers, who visited a licensing authority in company witb Mr A. R. de Balfour, manager of tho bureau, were refused temporary licences on the grounds. that licensed cars wero available. It is stated that their action in def ying the regulations is in order to test the position in the courts. BetWeen five and 10 other taxi-driv-ers, taking a lead from the drivers under contract to the bureau, also took Strathmore passengers to Rotorua, although they do not possess temporary touring licences.
