French Government Survives Barrage of Criticism DEFENCE- EXPENDITURE

(Beceived 20, 2.15 p.m.) PABIS, Nov. 19. The Chamber of Deputies passed a vote of confidence in the Government by 339 votes to 160 after a two-days barrage of criticism from the Opposition concerning internal genoral and fmancial policy and foreign affairs. M. Chautemps, Prime Minister, was - assured of a majority when M. Flandin asked supporters of the Centre not to vote, thereby giving the Government a free hand. "I believe that the defence expenditure, although heavy, is nevertheless an economy in the present-day condi"tion of Europe," deelared M. Chautemps in a speech. Beiterating France 's fidelity to her pledges and to the League, he said France would do everything .to restore the authority of the League. He also refer^ed to the consolidation accord with Britain, to which France was united in an equal desire for peace.
