Auckland Man in Trouble FALSE LETTER USED

AUCKLANB, Last Night. For attempting to obtain from Jei*. myn John Hudson, master "of. the steamer, Port Hunter, £10, by ' falsely representing that he was a horse-tfain-er named- Gray, David Daniel Gray, aged 38, engineer, was convict.ed in the Police Court and remanded for sentence. Captain Hudson said- that Grey presented a letter purporting to be from Captain Steele, . of the steamer Port Brisbane, stating that Gray had put him on to a winning horse and would do the "same for him. Gray told witness that if he gave him £l0'he would put him on a sure thing to w'in1 £K( on Saturday next. Witness found that the signature did not tally with that of Captain Steele. In a statement ' from' the doek, Gray said he had' put Steele' and others on to winners. Surely there was nothing v.rong with that? The Magistrate: No. But when- you ruake out that a letter coines from anr.tiier • captain, that is' getting. into another man's confidence. You have been convicted on this charge. The police- said that nothing ' wa» known about Gray. Pefcndant was remanded for seven for sentence. -
