SOCIAL EVENING
D (s) Company H.B. An atmosphere of jolliiication prevailed in the Hastings Drill Hall, wnen members of the D (S) Company, Hawke's Bay Regiment, held a most suceessful soeial evening to celebrate a year of success in the training fields and in their social aetivities. Despite all this jollification, however. there was a toneh of sadness felt, when Lieutenant R. Vaughan spoke of the officera and N.C.O.'s who have owen transferred from the regiment to the Army Depot. / The speaker remarked upon the wonderfui worlc done by tnem, and in losing officers of the calibre of Captains F. McBride, H. McKay and Lieut. L. R. Hampton, and N.C.O.'s in C.S.M. D. R. Graham and C.Q.M.S. A. Jonson, the company was experiencing d heavy loss. The evening was spent ra vocal anl instruinentai items and toasts, the toast list beig: The King (Captain F. M'cXlride); The Regiment (Captain H. Mcf Kg.y); Absent Friends (C.S-M. Graham); Kindred Army (Lieut. Hampton— C.S.M. W. Hayes, of the Mounties) ; Entertainers (Captain F. McBride — Gordon Redward). The musical items began with the ever-popular community singingt led by Q.M.S. Jonson, with Redward 's orchestra supplying the musie. A cornet duet by Len and Albert Giles* "The Indian Love Call," was well received, and. they had to reply to many encores. Tom Banks, with his dancing partner, "Miss Fondonski," amused the boys with a clever dancing act. As an encore, a tap dance was given. Mr Banks later gave another dance act with his partner. R. Verryt with his accordcon, had to rcply to many encores. Pts. Tom Thornburrow, the company 's own inagieian, showed some very clever trieks. and his final act, the disappearing glass of milk, brought a deafening rouud of applause. Gordon Redward 's item of a British tank going into action, was also cleverly given. As a finale, (t. Iledward,. with his orchestra, led 1 he boys jnareh arouod the Drill HaJll,
evcryone entered into the spirit of the evening. Before coneluding tlie evening 's entertainment an opportunity was taken by Captain F. McBride to presenc to C.S.M. D. R. Graham and C.Q.M.S. O. Jonson gifts of appreciation from the company. * The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" i broujiht the gveni^ig to a close. ^
